Pricing Built on Real Experience

Siding costs can vary a lot depending on where you look, and it’s easy to end up with numbers that don’t really apply to your home. Before you get into the pricing breakdown below, here’s where ours comes from.

These aren’t national averages pulled from a generic cost guide. They reflect the material and installation pricing Wright at Home Roofing & Exteriors sees firsthand on siding projects across Blaine and the North Metro.

We’ve been a family-owned and operated business since 2005, and as a James Hardie Preferred Contractor, we work with these materials every day, so we understand how they’re priced, how they install, and how they hold up in Minnesota weather.

Not all estimates are apples to apples. When we quote your project, we’ll walk you through what’s driving your specific number instead of just handing you a total.

Siding Pricing by Material

Here’s how the most common Minnesota siding materials compare on cost, upkeep, and hail performance.

Siding Materials Comparison

Compare installed siding costs, maintenance requirements, and hail resistance for a 2,200 sq. ft. home to find the right exterior siding for your property and budget.

Siding Material Installed Price / Sq. Ft. Estimated Total Cost Maintenance Hail Resistance Performance Details
Vinyl Siding $8.00–$11.00 $17,600–$24,200 Very Low ★★★★★ 3/5 rating Handles small to moderate hail well. Larger hailstones can crack or damage panels.
James Hardie Fiber Cement $11.00–$17.00 $24,200–$37,400 Low ★★★★★ 4/5 rating Highly durable and resistant to many impacts. Very large hailstones can chip edges or damage the surface.
LP SmartSide Engineered Wood $10.50–$16.50 $23,100–$36,300 Low ★★★★★ 5/5 rating Engineered wood siding designed for durability and impact resistance. Actual performance depends on the product and hail conditions.
Steel Siding $12.00–$20.00 $26,400–$44,000 Very Low ★★★★★ 4/5 rating Won't crack like brittle siding, but large hail can dent lighter-gauge steel panels and affect their appearance.

Cost note: Estimates are based on the supplied installed price ranges multiplied by 2,200 sq. ft. Confirm whether this figure represents the home's floor area or actual exterior wall area. Siding estimates are normally calculated using exterior wall area.

Hail-resistance note: Star ratings are illustrative comparisons, not standardized certifications. Verify manufacturer impact-test results, panel specifications, installation requirements, and warranty exclusions before making a purchasing decision.

Here’s a quick guide to picking the right fit:

  • Want the lowest cost? Vinyl is your most affordable, fastest-to-install option, though it fades faster and can crack in a bad hailstorm.
  • Want the best resale value? James Hardie fiber cement holds its color, resists fire, and is our most requested premium material. See James Hardie’s specs.
  • Most worried about hail? LP SmartSide is one of the top performers in impact testing and installs faster than fiber cement.
  • Want maximum durability? Steel siding resists fire, rot, and insects better than anything else here, though it costs the most and can dent under large hail.

What Determines Cost

Every estimate is different because every home is different. These are the biggest factors we weigh:

  • Existing siding. What we’re removing affects labor and disposal cost.
  • Home shape. A simple one or two-story home costs less to side than a complex three-story walkout.
  • Hidden surprises. Rot, lead paint, or asbestos found once we open the wall can add cost.
  • Soffit and fascia. A popular add-on while your siding is already off.
  • Accent details. Shake siding or board and batten boost curb appeal at an added cost.
  • Home size and complexity. More square footage or architectural detail means more material and labor.
  • Color and style. Standard, in-stock colors cost less than special-order finishes.
