Project Profile: Minneapolis Transformation using James Hardie Shingle Siding

James Hardie Shingle Siding Brings Historic Minneapolis Home Back to Life

Some remodeling projects do more than upgrade a home—they restore its soul. That’s exactly what happened with this James Hardie shingle siding and roofing replacement project in Minneapolis. What began as a frustrating insurance battle turned into a complete transformation—one that honored the home’s original charm while bringing it up to today’s standards.

At Wright at Home Roofing & Exteriors, we were proud to be the team that helped this homeowner get the coverage, design support, and craftsmanship needed to make it happen.

From Insurance Delays and Frustration to Full Transformation

After a significant hailstorm swept through the area, the homeowner was left battling insurance delays and contractor letdowns. Her original roofer struggled to get approval from her insurance provider, leaving her in limbo with a damaged roof and siding—and no clear path forward.

A friend who had worked with us in the past recommended Wright at Home Roofing & Exteriors, and from the moment she reached out, our team was ready to help. President and Owner Addison Kaasa provided both sales guidance and design expertise while working closely with the homeowner to get full insurance approval. What had once been a stalled-out claim quickly became a fully greenlit project.

Bringing Back the Home’s Original Character with Hardie® Shingle

One of the homeowner’s biggest priorities was restoring the aesthetic charm her house had when it was originally built. Years ago, the home had real cedar shake siding—a classic and beautiful exterior finish. But at some point, a previous homeowner replaced it with aluminum siding, stripping away the house’s distinctive style.

That’s where Hardie® Shingle Siding came in.

While this material is often used as an accent, the homeowner had a bigger vision: she wanted the entire house wrapped in Hardie® Shingle. The result was stunning. The Mountain Sage siding, paired with Arctic White trim, gave the home a timeless, textured appearance that looked both fresh and historically appropriate.

Project Scope and Materials

This was a full-scale exterior replacement project that included both roofing and siding:

  • Roof: CertainTeed Landmark® shingles in Moire Black
  • Siding: Hardie® Shingle Siding in Mountain Sage
  • Trim: Hardie® Trim in Arctic White

After removing the existing materials, we also discovered that the home’s sheathing wasn’t up to modern building codes. To bring it up to standard, we installed all-new plywood sheathing beneath the James Hardie system—ensuring the home was both code-compliant and structurally sound.

Solving Insurance and Code Challenges

Beyond the design aspect, this project involved real technical hurdles. The homeowner had hit a wall with her previous contractor and insurance provider. Our team stepped in with practical advice and handled the back-and-forth needed to get the full roof and siding replacement approved.

We also pulled all necessary permits for roofing and siding and ensured the project met local codes—especially important once we uncovered the outdated sheathing.

How Much Does a Project Like This Cost?

The total project cost was around $39,000 (at the time of publishing), broken down as:

  • Roofing: $10,000
  • Siding: $29,000

A full home wrap in James Hardie shingle siding is a higher-end investment, but it offers unmatched value. With its curb appeal, durability, and ability to echo traditional wood shake aesthetics without the ongoing maintenance, it’s one of the best long-term siding options available—especially for homeowners who care about preserving character and boosting protection.
